MEDIA RELEASE: Alberta’s first commercial hydrogen fueling station launches in the Edmonton region

March 27, 2024 [EDMONTON METROPOLITAN REGION]—Today marks a significant milestone in the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge as Blackjacks Roadhouse unveils Alberta’s first commercial hydrogen fueling station. This project is the beginning of an expanded hydrogen fueling network across Western Canada, which solves the hydrogen economy’s “chicken or the egg” dilemma—enabling fueling infrastructure to keep pace with demand.

Supported by PrairiesCan and made possible by joint collaboration from key stakeholders including the Alberta Motor Transport Association, Nikola Motor Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Nikola Corporation, Suncor, Leduc County, Emissions Reduction Alberta, and Blackjacks Roadhouse, this project is a demonstration of the collective efforts from across the Edmonton region and beyond, to accelerate the hydrogen economy. The Edmonton region is moving aggressively to take advantage of the hydrogen opportunity for Canada.

The HYLA fueling station, representing Nikola Corporation’s energy brand, will be situated along Highway 2 in Leduc County, Alberta. Highway 2 is a vital transportation corridor linking Alberta’s two largest urban centres— the Edmonton region and Calgary. This station will play a key role in decarbonizing one of Western Canada’s busiest highways, with approximately 96,000 vehicles passing by Blackjacks Roadhouse daily. Moreover, it will help meet the fueling needs of the Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles destined for the Canadian market and ensure a seamless and reliable refueling experience for hydrogen-powered vehicles in the Edmonton region.

The ultimate goal of the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge is to get 5,000 hydrogen-powered or dual-fuel-hydrogen vehicles on the roads in Western Canada by 2028. Investments into fueling infrastructure and supporting technology are a big part of reaching that goal and achieving the critical mass of vehicles needed to sustainably transition the commercial transportation sector to hydrogen.

Clarence Shields, owner and operator of Blackjacks Roadhouse, is making substantial investments in the project, underscoring his belief that hydrogen is Alberta’s future, and demonstrating the impact private industry can have on accelerating the hydrogen economy.

The HYLA modular fueler uses a 700-bar pressure-fill system—allowing hydrogen fuel supplied by Suncor to be compressed into smaller volumes, and dispensed into onboard storage for long-range vehicles like trucks, busses, and cars. And as demand for hydrogen grows, the goal is to replace the modular fueler with a permanent facility and relocate it to expand the HYLA fueling network across Alberta.

As Alberta remains the leading producer of hydrogen in Canada, initiatives like these reinforce the role hydrogen will play in achieving Canada’s net-zero goals by 2050, particularly in difficult-to-decarbonize sectors, like heavy-duty trucking.

The 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge isn’t just for large organizations; it’s an opportunity for everyone to come together to de-risk the transition to hydrogen.

Hydrogen adoption is more accessible in the Edmonton region

On June 6, Velocity Truck Centres (VTC) opened Alberta’s first hydrogen and compressed natural gas (CNG) service bay.

The opening of VTC’s service bay is another step towards making hydrogen vehicle adoption more accessible across the Edmonton region. The bay will provide state-of-the-art repairs to CNG and hydrogen-powered, heavy-duty trucks – in addition to helping train a new generation of hydrogen vehicle technicians.

In partnership with Lakeland College and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) VTC’s service bay will also act as a training centre for technicians to expand their knowledge on performing safe and reliable repairs on hydrogen vehicles.

Why is the switch to hydrogen vehicles critical?

In 2021, transportation accounted for 28% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Canadian federal government aims to be net-zero emissions by 2050, meaning that reducing the emissions from transportation is crucial.

To reduce emissions from the transportation industry, it’s essential to transition to other technologies, like electric and hydrogen vehicles.

Canada's Hydrogen Vehicle Initiative: Paving the Path Forward

In Canada, commercial hydrogen vehicles hold promise as a viable option, which is why the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge aims to increase the number of hydrogen vehicles on the roads of Western Canada to at least 5,000 in the next five years.

In promoting hydrogen vehicle use across Western Canada, the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge is working to make owning and maintaining hydrogen vehicles more accessible – which is why VTC’s new bay is such an important step in furthering the challenge.

The VTC bay's partnership with NAIT and Lakeland College will put Edmonton at the forefront of hydrogen technology. This collaboration will train workers to service hydrogen vehicles, paving the way for a smoother transition to clean transportation.

More advances in the 5k challenge in the Edmonton region

In addition to VTC’s service bay, the Edmonton region is making several other strides towards advancing the use of hydrogen vehicles.

At the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention, Air Products Canada announced plans to build a network of new hydrogen fueling stations along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, creating a “hydrogen highway” between Calgary and the Edmonton region.

While Air Product’s fueling stations are still underway, the Edmonton region has already opened hydrogen fueling stations. In April of 2024, Blackjacks Roadhouse opened Alberta’s first commercial hydrogen fueling station in Leduc County.

Additionally, the Edmonton International Airport (YEG) partnered with Toyota Canada to introduce 100 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) into the Edmonton region – the first of its kind in Alberta. This initiative supports the acceleration of the adoption of hydrogen technology in Western Canada's commercial transportation sector. The Edmonton International airport also houses a hydrogen fueling station on their grounds to support the use of these hydrogen vehicles.

During the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention, Alberta Innovates and Emissions Reduction Alberta also announced $57 million in project funding. The Government of Alberta, through Alberta Innovates and Emissions Reduction Alberta, will fund 28 projects spanning hydrogen production, usage, distribution, storage, and transmission.

These initiatives highlight the region's commitment to leading the way in the adoption of hydrogen vehicles, making significant progress in infrastructure and education to support a sustainable future.

Each of these projects across the Edmonton region play a key role in supporting the integration of 5,000 hydrogen vehicles. Between VTC’s commitment to building more service stations in Western Canada just like this one, to Air Products Canada’s and places like Blackjack’s Roadhouse work on building hydrogen-fuelling stations, last Thursday’s event symbolizes yet another step towards a greener future.

AZETEC launches first heavy-duty Class 8 FCEVs suited for Canada's winter roads

The Alberta Zero Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC), a groundbreaking $22 million initiative supported by Emissions Reduction Alberta, is playing a pivotal role in advancing hydrogen mobility across Canada.

This project is driving two critical advancements that will further establish Alberta’s role in the future of clean energy and transportation – including producing fuel-cell grade hydrogen and the development of fuel cell electric vehicles that are strong enough to perform through the Canadian winter.

Long-haul transportation has long been a challenge for zero-emission solutions and these hydrogen-powered trucks are set to prove the viability of fuel cells in real-world, long-distance applications, where extreme weather and heavy loads can push conventional technologies to their limits.

These heavy-duty trucks will be put to the test on Alberta’s biggest transportation corridor, the QEII – and their performance there could set a new standard for zero-emission trucking in Canada.

AZETEC is leveraging Alberta’s abundant and low-cost natural gas resources for the production of fuel-cell-grade hydrogen.

By utilizing carbon capture technologies, hydrogen production in Alberta is both low-cost and low-carbon and can be at a global scale, positioning the province at the forefront of the global energy transition.

Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA), one of AZETEC’s 16 stakeholders, has recently began collaborating with their partners on the design, manufacturing, and testing of two of the first-ever of their size and capacity hydrogen FCEV Class-8 fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) trucks -- designed specifically for Canadian weights and winter conditions.

“Our initiatives have laid a strong foundation for alternative energy adoption in heavy-duty transportation,” Robert Harper, AMTA President, said. “The introduction of FCEVs, investments in hydrogen production, storage, distribution, along with mechanic and safety training has positioned Alberta as a leader in the hydrogen economy.

The official launch of the AZETEC trucks at the AMTA Industry Innovations expo marks a milestone in Alberta’s hydrogen journey.

Not only do these trucks have the potential to reduce emissions in the transportation sector, but they also showcase Alberta’s commitment to innovation in clean technology. If successful, this project could accelerate the adoption of hydrogen fuel across industries and regions, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of freight transport — a sector that accounts for a substantial portion of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The development of carbon neutral, cold weather heavy-duty trucking – and the production of hydrogen with it -- is not just a technical achievement, but another achievement for the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge.

“The 5000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge is about more than just putting vehicles on the road,” Brent Lakeman, Edmonton Global’s director of the hydrogen initiative, said.

“The challenge is about building the hydrogen infrastructure that is suited to our Western Canadian conditions and will drive the clean energy economy forward. Initiatives like these pave the way forward for more hydrogen-powered solutions. Every hydrogen and dual fuel vehicle that hits the road helps to prove the viability of hydrogen and brings us one step closer to widespread adoption.”

Air Products to create a "hydrogen highway" in Alberta with network of hydrogen fuelling stations

March 7, 2025

At the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention, Air Products announced its plans to build a network of permanent, commercial hydrogen fueling stations along the Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) highway, a major highway linking Alberta's two largest major metropolitan areas, Calgary and Edmonton. These fueling stations will create a “hydrogen highway” said Air Products’ Vice President, Hydrogen for Mobility, Eric Guter, during the announcement.

Listen to the full announcement from Air Products' Vice President, Hydrogen for Mobility, Eric Guter during the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention:

The fueling stations will utilize liquid hydrogen, produced at Air Products net-zero energy complex that is currently under construction in the Edmonton region. In a sit down with Edmonton Global’s Chris McLeod after the announcement, Air Products’ Vice President and General Manager, Canada, Rachel Smith, said that using liquid hydrogen will be “what’s going to enable the transition of the transportation sector to zero emission fuel.”

Smith also commented on the advantages that hydrogen vehicles offer over electric vehicles.

“We are making sure that there’s an awareness that hydrogen solves all of the challenges that we continue to hear about electric vehicles—including the weight of the battery, the inefficiency that causes, the cold weather impacts, the fueling times, and the electrical infrastructure that is required.”

“While electric vehicles may work in some applications, in some geographies, what’s important is hydrogen works in all applications, in all geographies. It’s ideal for Canada, where … we do have cold weather impacts and long-haul distances,” Smith continued.

The construction of these fueling stations will de-risk hydrogen adoption and make owning and operating hydrogen or dual-fuel hydrogen powered vehicles more accessible to fleet owners looking to decarbonize their fleets—a vital piece to the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge, which aims to get 5,000 hydrogen or dual-fuel hydrogen vehicles on Western Canada's roads within five years.

Smith said that consumer confidence, or how vehicle buyers feel about the state of the hydrogen vehicle industry, will be one of the key topics to address in the transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles, but that “multiple fueling stations along QE2 will make sure there’s that consumer confidence in this corridor and start getting hydrogen vehicles on the road.”

“Liquid hydrogen is fuel cell grade ready,” Smith added. “So it already meets that high quality specification required. Secondly, it allows us to really mirror that consumer experience that we all enjoy today with safe, reliable, fast fills. That’s how we’re going to convince this market to transition – is making sure that the consumer experience is equal to or even better than what we experience today.”

Smith ended the discussion noting how important these fueling stations are for the advancement of the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge and the hydrogen vehicle market as a whole.

“The 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle challenge is so incredibly important to building out the transportation market and that consumer confidence in that market. Now we need those 5,000 vehicles on the road—we’re ready for them.”

Decarbonizing Western Canada’s transportation sector

Edmonton Global recently commissioned Deloitte to complete an assessment on the state of hydrogen adoption in the commercial transportation sector in Western Canada. The purpose of the assessment was to understand the current state and provide some actionable opportunities to scale the adoption of hydrogen in this sector. The results have been published in a report entitled, “Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative - Current State Assessment.”

This article will provide a summary of the report which was completed with funding from Natural Resources Canada as part of its Zero Emissions Vehicle Awareness Initiative. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the hydrogen opportunity for Western Canada’s commercial transportation sector.

Key findings

Overall, the report highlights three key findings:

  1. Hydrogen vehicles are better suited for long-haul heavy-duty trucking than Battery Electric.
  2. Fleet operators prioritize the total cost of ownership when making vehicle purchasing decisions.
  3. The Edmonton Region is Alberta’s most strategic location for hydrogen vehicle adoption.

Hydrogen vehicles are better suited for long-haul heavy-duty trucking than Battery Electric

The report acknowledges that many pathways are needed to decarbonize commercial transportation. However, while battery electric vehicles may make sense for some applications, like light-duty short-haul trucking, hydrogen-powered vehicles must be at the heart of decarbonizing the commercial transport sector. This is largely due to the extended range and performance over long distances, while carrying heavy loads, and in extreme weather conditions.

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV)

The report goes on to say that Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles offer significant potential for long-haul trucking because they have similar fueling times, range, and performance as traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Dual-fuel technology

The report further identifies dual-fuel technology as serving an important bridge technology that will allow fleets to more nimbly and affordably decarbonize their existing fleets by retrofitting them with this technology.

How truck purchasing decisions are made

According to the report, fleet operators consider the total cost of ownership (TCO), which includes energy costs, subsidies, and maintenance. Fuel prices, how long a vehicle is owned, and how far it’s driven influence total cost of ownership the most. This reinforces the need to consider strategies that will support lowering hydrogen fuel costs. Notably, fuel costs are projected to reach competitive levels as the infrastructure and supply chain develop. The report also notes that federal and provincial grants and incentives that address the TCO of hydrogen vehicles can play a significant role in reducing costs, making hydrogen technology a more affordable and attractive choice.

While TCO is the leading factor, it is one of many criteria. Reliability and performance, brand reputation, weight regulations, and customer support are also key drivers influencing fleet owners’ purchasing decisions. Together, these factors shape purchasing decisions for fleet operators.

The Edmonton Region is the most strategic location for hydrogen vehicle adoption

The report identified strategic trucking corridors that should be prioritized for fuel station development. The recommendations were based on location, access to fuel, and potential for hydrogen vehicle pilots. Developing these stations will be critical in ensuring reliable hydrogen supply for long-haul trucks.

Edmonton to Calgary

Edmonton to Calgary was identified as the highest impact strategic route with Highway 2 having some of the highest truck traffic in the province. Spanning 300 km, this route presents opportunities for investments in fueling stations within and between both regions.

There is one permanent commercial hydrogen fueling station already in place in the Edmonton Region, along with several temporary stations. In April 2024, Air Products announced its plans to open a multi-modal hydrogen fueling station at its Edmonton facility and create a “hydrogen highway” of refueling stations between the Edmonton Region and Calgary by 2025.

Edmonton to Prince George

Edmonton to Prince George via Highway 16 is another key route with potential opportunity. The report suggests building a fueling station in Hinton, Alberta to connect the two hydrogen hubs.

Edmonton to Fort McMurray

High trucking volumes along the Edmonton to Fort McMurray corridor, covering 450 km one-way, is a strong indicator of the need for hydrogen refueling stations.

British Columbia

In British Columbia, the Lower Mainland and Prince George were identified as the most strategic regions for fueling station development. Currently, Vancouver and Prince George have collectively announced their ambitions to produce approximately 400 tonnes of hydrogen per day, which will undoubtedly spur investment into hydrogen fueling infrastructure.

HTEC plans to open a heavy-duty, higher capacity, fueling station located on Tsawwassen First Nation land near Vancouver. HTEC also has a proposed clean hydrogen facility which is expected to support the deployment of up to 30,000 fuel cell vehicles.

Hydra Energy plans to open the first commercial fueling station in Prince George with on-site hydrogen production. The company also has plans to open a low-carbon hydrogen production facility and commercial fueling station in 2024, on the same site.

Conclusion

Canada’s entire hydrogen value chain, including fleet operators, service and technology providers, manufacturers, refueling station operators, and hydrogen producers all have a role to play in decarbonizing our future.

The Edmonton Region’s hydrogen ecosystem holds strategic importance in decarbonizing the commercial transportation sector — particularly for Class 8 trucks and buses for long-haul and heavy-haul transportation. With hydrogen-powered vehicles becoming more commercially available for wide-scale deployment, the Calgary to Edmonton corridor, Alberta’s busiest highway, stands as a key starting point to develop a scalable hydrogen refueling network across Western Canada.

How Alberta’s hydrogen hubs are accelerating momentum across Western Canada

June 24, 2025

At the 2025 Canadian Hydrogen Convention, three leaders in Alberta’s hydrogen economy took to the Edmonton Global Stage to discuss how hubs accelerate the momentum of hydrogen adoption across Western Canada — through strategic collaboration and engagement.

Brent Lakeman (Executive Director of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB), Zak Cunningham (Lead of the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub) and Rebecca Goldsack (Chair of Hydrogen Alberta and COO of Diesel Tech Industries) joined Kessia Kopecky of Edmonton Global for a conversation about what it takes to build a sustainable hydrogen economy across Western Canada.

Collaboration as a foundation

To build a hydrogen economy that delivers real results, collaboration can’t be optional, it must be the foundation. On stage, speakers pointed to the critical role hubs play in bringing fragmented efforts together, aligning priorities, and setting the pace for coordinated action across regions and sectors.

Emphasizing the power of collaboration, Brent highlighted how hydrogen hubs help turn fragmented efforts across industry into a unified strategy. “Hubs allow us to work together — beyond single projects or companies — to show what a coordinated hydrogen economy can look like,” Brent said. “That’s what attracts investment, builds public confidence, and sets the stage for long-term success.”

Building a unified strategy, however, also depends on a strong foundation of knowledge and alignment. Zak expanded on this, explaining that hubs play a critical role in organizing the early work needed to build confidence in the sector. “If we want to accelerate hydrogen, we need more than market forces,” he said. “Hubs bring the right people together, identify gaps, and help us move forward with confidence.”

That momentum, once underway, also needs to be scaled — and shared. Rebecca emphasized Alberta’s unique strengths and the importance of using them to bring more players into the hydrogen economy. “We’ve got the industrial base, the workforce, and the experience ... Now we need to share what we’re learning, scale it, and bring more people into the conversation.”

Connecting Western Canada

Alberta’s hydrogen hubs are doing more than advancing local projects — they’re shaping the foundation of a unified, scalable hydrogen economy across Western Canada. With distinct strengths in both the Edmonton region and Calgary, collaboration between hubs helps unlock efficiencies, prevent duplication, and accelerate adoption across sectors and geographies.

Brent emphasized how this cross-regional alignment is crucial, especially for transportation. “Vehicles aren’t staying in one place — they’re moving between cities and provinces,” he said. “Being able to connect those hubs is really critical. We need consistency, alignment, and awareness about what’s happening across the region.”

Zak Cunningham echoed that sentiment, pointing to the value of coordination when building hydrogen infrastructure along interprovincial corridors. “How do you optimize the amount of infrastructure needed so you're not overbuilding while also not falling short on demand?” he asked. “That’s the balance regional collaboration helps us achieve.”

Rebecca Goldsack underlined the importance of shared learning and transferability and how it can influence the broader hydrogen economy in Western Canada. “We can do this here in Alberta, Edmonton, Calgary — all these regions — and then we can take it and move it to other regions and give them our key learnings,” she said. “What’s worked, what hasn’t worked — so that it’s really scalable to all markets.”

From infrastructure planning to stakeholder engagement, the panel made one thing clear: building a hydrogen economy takes more than projects. It takes trust, coordination, and constant communication. Connection and alignment between hubs can drive momentum forward and keep everyone looking in the same direction.

The global hydrogen economy has a front-runner — and it’s the Edmonton region

June 18, 2025

Brent Lakeman, Executive Director of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB, recently joined the award-winning Executive Wins podcast to share how the Edmonton region is leading the clean energy evolution.

From building Canada’s first hydrogen hub to launching the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge, Brent breaks down how the HUB is creating an ecosystem for profitable, sustainable hydrogen development — and attracting global investment along the way.

Ultimately, this discussion was about more than addressing policy — it was about how collaboration at all levels can fuel economic growth.

Brent emphasized that building a hydrogen economy is not just about producing fuel — it’s about enabling a comprehensive system of infrastructure, regulation, skilled labour, and public support.

“It’s not just about producing hydrogen. It’s about the demand; the training; infrastructure; public trust; and enabling policies,” Brent said. “That’s why this ecosystem approach is so essential.”

Mapping a hydrogen economy

In many cases, hydrogen is a viable solution in hard-to-abate sectors— such as freight transport, industrial heat, and large-scale logistics. But to unlock that potential, the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB is focused on mapping out all the players who need to be involved, from engineers and fleet operators to insurers, regulators, and safety professionals.

One example Brent shared was first responders.

“First responders are a vital part of the hydrogen ecosystem,” Brent said. “If we’re going to scale safely and effectively, we need to engage them early, provide the right training, and ensure they’re fully prepared to support this transition.” This proactive planning extends to areas like workforce retraining, cross-sector adoption, and value-added manufacturing. Companies traditionally focused on traditional energy are now exploring hydrogen-related opportunities — a pivot that could diversify Alberta’s industrial base while building on our decades of experience in the energy sector.

“There are companies [in Alberta] that have been manufacturing parts for oil and gas for decades — and now they’re seeing new opportunity in hydrogen,” Brent noted.

From vision to reality

The HUB is also actively building hydrogen transportation corridors across Western Canada and supporting municipalities and private fleets in hydrogen adoption.

One major initiative moving this work forward is the Western Canada Hydrogen Corridors Initiative — a strategic effort led by the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB, with funding from Alberta Ecotrust Foundation, Emissions Reduction Alberta, and Alberta Innovates.

“We recognized early on that if we’re going to have hydrogen trucks on the road, it’s not enough to work in isolation,” Brent said. “It’s about building a larger ecosystem — one that stretches from Edmonton to Calgary, Prince George, Fort McMurray, even Prince Rupert.”

By working closely with municipalities, private fleets, and infrastructure developers, the HUB is laying the groundwork for a viable commercial hydrogen transport network — one that will not only reduce emissions but also generate long-term economic opportunities across the supply chain.

“We’ve come a long way in just four years,” Brent said. “But the next five will be about acceleration — scaling pilots, deepening partnerships, and staying connected to new segments.”

Recap: A new phase for the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB (The Edmonton Global Stage)

June 16, 2025

The Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB (the HUB) is entering a new phase—and its recent relaunch is about more than structure; it’s about scale, strategy, and seizing a global opportunity for the Edmonton region.

The Edmonton region is “where it’s all happening,” Brent Lakeman, Executive Director of the HUB, said during a panel discussion on the Edmonton Global Stage at the 2025 Canadian Hydrogen Convention. Alongside Lakeman, formerly the Director of the Hydrogen Initiative at Edmonton Global, joined representatives of the HUB’s four funding partners (Edmonton Global, Alberta Innovates, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA), Edmonton International Airport (YEG):

  • Mark Plamondon – Executive Director, AIHA
  • Ericka Rios – Program Manager, Alberta Innovates
  • Myron Keehn – President & CEO, YEG

The session delved into the details of the March relaunch, the HUB’s origins, and the renewed vision moving into its next phase.

The next phase of the HUB relaunch aims to scale hydrogen deployment across infrastructure and station systems, as well as mobility—a strategy that will be guided by its three strategic pillars: ecosystem convener, system integrator, and policy advocate.

Panelists emphasized that the Edmonton region’s strength lies in deep-rooted strategic partnerships, cross-sector collaboration, and global market competitiveness.

Reflecting on the Edmonton region’s resources and location, Brent stressed that the region is “the best place to invest in the hydrogen economy because you've got that strong industrial base, you've got the key corridors, and you’re well positioned.”

Mark Plamondon connected the region’s hydrogen economic potential to its carbon management capabilities. “I really think the opportunity in the Heartland, and really for the Edmonton region, really is driven primarily by that carbon capture sequestration capability which leads to production of low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen which then can lead to a lot of the opportunities that we're talking about here at this conference,” Mark said.

Positioning YEG as a living lab for hydrogen integration, Myron described a bold vision in which travelers could arrive in an autonomous vehicle powered by hydrogen, get on through a terminal building powered and cooled through hydrogen, and onto an airplane likely powered by hydrogen.”

Building on that mission, both Myron and Erica pointed to a standout initiative already underway: large snow sweepers at the airport are being retrofitted for hydrogen dual-fuel capabilities—a global first. “I’m very excited to see it because it is a first-of-a-kind project—it hasn’t been done anywhere in the world,” Rios said, emphasizing the project’s significance as a tangible step toward broader hydrogen adoption, supported by Alberta Innovates.

With world-class carbon capture infrastructure, industrial expertise, and export-ready technologies, the Edmonton region is positioned to lead the global hydrogen economy. While challenges remain—carbon pricing, evolving policy, and market incentives—the HUB is building momentum through targeted working groups and coordinated action.

The Edmonton region isn’t just contributing to the transition—it is setting the standard for hydrogen development and commercialization. The Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB has a roadmap, insight, and on-the-ground support to continue driving this momentum.

What is hydrogen week?

April 17, 2025

Running from April 22-25, Hydrogen Week focuses on promoting the Edmonton Metro Region’s hydrogen economy. The week is anchored by the Canadian Hydrogen Convention’s (CHC) annual return to the region. As one of the largest hydrogen conferences in North America, CHC attracts people from around the globe to the Edmonton region to attend. Hydrogen Week allows the region to celebrate the innovation and leadership demonstrated through the region’s hydrogen ecosystem.

Hydrogen Week is a coordinated effort to build awareness, drive investment, and amplify the Edmonton region’s leadership in clean energy. Throughout the week, there are a number of activities planned that will shine a spotlight on the Edmonton region’s hydrogen story. From panel discussions on the Edmonton Global stage at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention, to investment announcements, to the lighting of the City of Edmonton’s high-level bridge, there’s a lot of activity going on.

The Edmonton region’s hydrogen economy

Hydrogen is a critical tool in the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; it can power vehicles, decarbonize heavy industry, generate electricity, and act as long term energy storage.

As Canada’s largest producer of hydrogen, the Edmonton region produces over 2.5M pounds of hydrogen every year. Using the province's abundance of natural gas, the Edmonton region uses steam methane reforming, accompanied by carbon capture, to create low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen.

Beyond the Edmonton region’s capacity for hydrogen production, hydrogen represents a unique opportunity for Canada (and the world’s) decarbonization efforts.

The Edmonton region already has a number of projects and initiatives aimed at decarbonizing hard to abate sectors – such as Heidelberg Materials first in the world net-zero facility in the cement industry and the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge.

Both Heidelberg’s Edmonton region facility and the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge are working in industries facing roadblocks to their decarbonization. Heidelberg’s project focuses on the cement industry; a sector that contributes as much as 9% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Another industry facing decarbonization is heavy-duty, long haul trucking – a key focus for the 5,000 Vehicle Challenge.

Projects underway in the Edmonton region are helping Canada meet its net-zero targets and positioning the country as a key player in the international hydrogen economy.

This is a chance to show how a province long defined by oil is rapidly repositioning itself to lead in the clean energy economy.

Hydrogen Week gives the world a window into the region’s leadership. It shows how regional innovation can shape global energy solutions and underscores why international companies are looking to the Edmonton region to invest, collaborate, and grow.

Why should you celebrate Hydrogen Week this year?

Hydrogen Week is dedicated to promoting and highlighting the Edmonton region’s hydrogen economy and everything our region has to offer global decarbonization efforts; it’s a celebration of clean energy innovation, a call to action, and a showcase of how one region is helping the world move toward net zero.
